Photographed at Queenscliff Pier, Victoria, Australia, 8.15 PM EST, 31/3/1990.

Below : Two enlargements from the first image above.

This event was totally unexpected. I was at the Queenscliff Pier and about to drive back to Melbourne when the horizon began to mysteriously glow red and brighten. At first I thought the sunset was making some miraculous 'come back' but then realised we were actually looking south. The 'color' rose so rapidly and unexpectedly in the sky that I feared what was coming ( not having seen one before ). It extended nearly overhead and it was when I could see green 'curtains' of light rippling that I recognised it as aurora. It persisted for only a few minutes and then dimmed and shrunk back slowly toward the south horizon.
