| Parhelic Circle segment (downward curving arc) with Parhelia or 'Sun Dogs' (on either side) and 22 degree Halo (circle).
This series was taken at around 12.30 PM on 7/5/03 from Kangaroo Ground near Melbourne. The first image (ABOVE) was taken on a Rollieflex SL66 (6x6cm) with a 40mm Distagon lens (equiv. to about 21mm very wide-angle lens on a 35mm camera). The other three (see next pages) were taken with a Nikon with 35mm, 105mm and 300mm lenses. After the first image was taken the Sun Dog (Parhelia) on the left dimmed in brightness as the right hand one grew in intensity. The Halo was fairly weak in brightness. A slight inner Corona (red) circles the sun - or it could possibly be lens flare. The radiating lines (like the spokes of a wheel) is certainly lens flare. conditions were very bright, being midday winter sunlight with a thin veil of cloud. Exposure was 500th sec at f16 - effectively dimming the sky considerably. Individual Sun Dogs (much less bright) continued to appear and then dim 'on and off' throughout the afternooon. Because these displays are so broad across the sky and accompanied with very bright white cloud they usually go unoticed by most. |
